Here are 9 easy ways to cope with stress at work and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

1. Keep A Healthy Diet

Many people do not know this but eating unhealthily is prone to cause you more stress than peace. By eating junk food you are less likely to finish a certain task or be as productive as you would like. It is common to find employees binge eating on fast foods and junk foods as a way of coping with stress, as these foods bring temporary pleasure.

It is, however, a bad idea as pizza’s and burgers only make you lethargic and slow you down which will inevitably make you even more stressed. Smoking during work breaks is also bad for your health.

A healthy diet is important to keep you focused and driven to accomplish your goals for the day.

Planning and scheduling your day with realistic goals is important as it keeps you focused on what you can control. It is advisable to make a weekly plan of activities which are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. This way, you can ward of distractions and you are less confused about what to do first. A viable plan always leads to a productive day. Above all else, forget about multitasking.

3. Get Enough Rest

This cannot be emphasized enough! For a busy career person, 7 to 9 hours of sleep is the required amount needed every night. This ensures that the body and brain are well rested and can tackle the next day’s challenges and tasks with ease.

Regular cat naps of around 20 minutes throughout the day can help improve productivity.

It is also important to set a sleeping pattern and stick to it religiously. Not getting enough sleep could lead to chronic insomnia and burnout.

4. Identify Your Stressors

By pinpointing exactly what gets you riled up in the office space or even before then is important in the fight against stress. If it is deadlines find a smart way to beat them. If it is your perceptions of success and anxiety getting in your way, learn how to cope and relax.

The office space can be a crazy place as it is always buzzing with activity of people trying to reply to emails, beat deadlines and attend meetings. The office environment can heighten someone’s pressure so it’s always a good idea to get away from it all to recharge.

You can do this by going for a walk or working in another open and more conducive area. More companies today are offering meditation rooms, massage rooms and game rooms for employees to release steam. This ensures that they are more productive.

8. Mindfulness

Being human, we tend to focus on the past or future which cause anxiety and depression. It is important to remember to stay in the present at all times. This gives you an open mind and freedom. It is also important to remain grateful for everything. Recognize what you are blessed with instead of focusing on what-ifs and things out of your control.

9. Seek help

No man is an island. It is important to form positive work relationships with colleagues. This is essential as you have someone you can vent to.

Just talking about it instead of keeping it bottled up inside can release some of the tension. Your employer may also have stress management resources available such as therapy sessions where you can talk to a therapist.
