Top 10 Largest Company IPOs Of The 2018
In the United States we saw 173 companies go public in the first three quarters of 2018. By the end of the year the total number of companies reached the number of 191 and raised $46.8 billion. It seems that the year 2018, exceeded the 2017 the 181 IPOs filed in 2017, as well as 2016’s 102 IPOs.
According to Renaissance Capital, IPO activities rose by 42 percent year-over-year in the first 10 months of the year, but they declined by 66 percent in the last two months of the year.
The leading companies that have gone public this year are in the healthcare sector or in the tech sector. Many of these companies have been very successful in raising capital and rewarding early investors. Any company that manages to go public is considered to have a huge success. Most companies decide on doing so in order to raise money. Also, this way they spread the ownership risk across a larger group of investors.
Going public has proved to be a great strategy for companies to raise money. For instance, Visa, the credit card giant, raised $17.9 billion in capital with its 2008 IPO, while in 2012, Facebook raised $16.0 billion.
What’s interesting about this year’s IPOs is that it was a great year for biotechs. Also, the number of US domestic tech companies that went public decreased, while almost half of the 10 largest IPOs were Chinese. This was due to weak market conditions in China that drove Chinese companies to raise money in the U.S.
We’re ranking now the IPOs with a total offer amount of half a billion dollars or more at the time of their pricing. These companies all trade on the NASDAQ or NYSE exchanges.
So far, the average performance of this year’s IPOs has been poor due to the stock market sell-off that began in late September/early October, according to Kennedy. Shares of companies that went public this year had averaged a 5% gain through December 13, well below the five-year average of 20%, Renaissance data show.
